This article addresses the methodological challenges to collection of data on the situation of parents of adults who become ill and die of HIV/AIDS. It describes the variety of quantitative and qualitative data collection strategies we followed in our research on this topic in Thailand and draws lessons for researchers interested in conducting related studies in Africa or other settings.
