Intro Paragraph:
Adolescents appear to be a relatively healthy group. Even so,
they may be practicing unhealthy behaviors that will ultimately
result in disability and death. More than 33 percent
of the disease burden and almost 60 percent of premature
deaths among adults can be associated with behaviors or
conditions that began or occurred during adolescence—for
example, tobacco and alcohol use, poor eating habits, sexual
abuse, and risky sex. Focusing attention on diseases experienced
during adolescence and on risk factors rooted in adolescence
makes sense. And adolescent health efforts should
emphasize prevention because so much of the disease burden
is preventable and because prevention is a particularly costeffective
strategy.
