(first paragraph) Developing countries are now undergoing the same dramatic shift in the causes of illness and death that developed countries experienced after 1900. Communicable diseases are no longer the only threat: Because of changes in diet and lifestyle as well as rapid population aging in developing countries, major noncommunicable diseases (NCDs)—such as circulatory system diseases, cancers, diabetes, major psychiatric disorders, and chronic respiratory diseases—are now quickly adding to the worldwide burden of disease (see table).
