(first paragraph) Controlling the deadliest infectious diseases in the world—diarrheal diseases, respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections, meningitis, pneumonia, and hospitalacquired infections—is more difficult today because of the emergence of antimicrobial drug resistance. Resistance has emerged in malaria, HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and most bacterial infections, which together constitute a significant proportion of the burden of disease in developing countries.
