This is a joint USAID publication with the UNICEF Water Environment and Sanitation (WES) program, the World Bank’s Water and Sanitation Program and the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council. The report discusses the burden of diarrhea and makes the case for prevention of diarrhea through hygiene improvement to reduce diarrhea morbidity, which has remained relatively stable despite the decline in mortality in the past decades. The document also presents the Hygiene Improvement Framework, a comprehensive approach to preventing diarrhea that addresses three elements: improving access to hardware; hygiene promotion; and supporting an enabling environment.
