Although overall mortality rates have declined in Asia, the problem of multi-drug resistant falciparum malaria is spreading. Falciparum malaria resistant to chloroquine and sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine is widespread, and mefloquine and quinine resistance has also been reported. This inventory documents the status of drug-resistant malaria in four countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal (BBIN). The inventory has attempted to meet the challenge of consolidating information on malaria drug resistance within this geographic purview. The report also includes recommendations for issues that need to be addressed for cross-border, follow-up activities.
