In response to the devastation of Hurricane Georges in the Dominican Republic (DR), USAID brought together the DR national water authority, the MOH and 12 local NGOs under the Hurricane Georges Reconstruction Initiative. The DR program focused on improving hardware (infrastructure), while at the same time maximizing health impact by adding hygiene promotion to ongoing water and sanitation improvement activities. To monitor progress related to hygiene behavior change, a series of surveys was conducted. Findings from the baseline and midterm surveys, conducted in December 2001 and May 2002 respectively, were documented in EHP Activity Report (AR) 120, published in July 2003. The above-mentioned AR 137 updates AR 120 and documents results from two subsequent household surveys, conducted in June 2003 (second midterm survey) and March 2004 (final survey). The findings showed that overall, improved infrastructure combined with a well-designed behavior change program can bring about measurable results in the reduction of childhood diarrhea disease.
