Pathfinder International is pleased to announce the publication of Creating Partnerships to Prevent Early Marriage in the Amhara Region. In the Amhara regional state of Ethiopia, 50 percent of girls are married before the age of 15, often suffering major physical, emotional, economic, and social repercussions. They are at greater risk for reproductive health complications and gender-based violence. This article is an overview of the efforts Pathfinder and its local partners are taking to prevent early marriage, including extensive advocacy with community and religious leaders and community and legal interventions through Pathfinder’s community-based reproductive health programs. Pathfinder works with women’s associations and girls’ clubs to empower women and girls to fight against harmful traditional practices.
