Background
Ensuring healthcare to the urban poor is emerging as a growing challenge for policy makers and program managers as India is rapidly urbanizing in recent decades. During the decade 1991-2001, the urban population grew by 68 million or by 31.2%. It is growing at almost double the rate as compared to the rural population. In the backdrop of Government's announcement to soon launch the National Urban Health Mission, UHRC has organized a one-day workshop on "Community Level Processes in Ensuring Health to the Urban Poor" on 16th January 2008 at Hotel Grand Intercontinental, New Delhi with the objective to highlight urban health concerns and the significance of involving slum communities as strategic partners in improving health, nutrition and other basic services for the urban poor.
The workshop witnessed supportive participation of three Central Government Ministries associated with urban health policies and programs namely Ministry of Health and Family welfare, Ministry of Housing and Poverty Alleviation, and Ministry of Women and Child Development.
