This is an exploratory research with the main objective of identifying the status of governance and leadership in NGOs operating in the reproductive health (RH) sector in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The regional reports portray the NGO movement in SSA as dynamic and fast growing. NGOs have moved to the centre stage in RH and are now perceived as important actors who are expected to be more efficient service providers stepping in where the public sector has been unable to effectively provide services. Although the exact number of NGOs in the RH sector is not known, they number in the thousands and continue to grow rapidly despite numerous social and political problems.
