Following years of close collaboration with Ethiopia’s federal Ministry of Health, regional, zonal, woreda, and kebele sector offices, and community leaders, Pathfinder began supporting the HEP soon after its launch in 2003. Pathfinder’s community-based reproductive health agents support the government-trained health extension workers by introducing them to the community, mobilizing the community for immunization days, providing information and counseling on contraception and family planning, and collaborating with the health extension workers to teach families to install pit latrines and improve hygiene.

Women’s Empowerment in Ethiopia: New Solutions to Ancient Problems

Pathfinder International is pleased to announce the publication of Women’s Empowerment in Ethiopia: New Solutions to Ancient Problems. This paper documents the challenges and successes of two programs in Tigray, Amhara, Oromia, and SNNRP that combine increased access to reproductive health care and family planning with comprehensive social change. In collaboration with partners, community and religious leaders, and medical providers, these programs have advanced changes in law enforcement and community values to overcome harmful traditional practices. Opportunities for girls and women to pursue education and income-generating activities bring credibility and inspiration to young women seeking new alternatives. Results include:

25.3 million adolescents received RH and adolescent health messages;
1,200 judges, police officers, and prosecutors trained in implementation of new laws;
12,950 girls were helped to evade early marriage (in two provinces in 2004 only);
2,400 women were trained in small business management and given microcredit loans; and
650 traditional circumcisers were trained to promote RH.

Pathfinder International’s Causes and Consequences of Early Marriage in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia reports on a study conducted in the spring of 2006 that gathered both quantitative and qualitative information on the practice of early marriage in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. A wide range of data on socio-economic background characteristics and marriage patterns—including age at marriage, stability of marriage, and causes and consequences of early marriage—was collected and analyzed by the study. The report provides information to guide the design, implementation, and monitoring of programs aimed at reducing the incidence of early marriage in Amhara and all of Ethiopia. Results and insights may prove helpful in contexts outside of Ethiopia as well.

Pathfinder International is pleased to announce the publication of a new, comprehensive trainer's guide and participant’s manual for community health workers, "Community Home-Based Care for People and Communities Living with HIV/AIDS: A Comprehensive Training Course for Community Health Workers" and "Community Home-Based Care for People and Communities Living with HIV/AIDS: A Handbook for Community Health Workers."

This pretested, peer-reviewed curriculum provides the knowledge and skills necessary for community health workers to holistically care for people living with HIV/AIDS, train primary caregivers and clients, and mobilize communities around HIV/AIDS prevention, care, treatment, and support. The trainer’s guide uses simple language and emphasizes participatory learning that does not require high literacy levels of participants. Unit topics include HIV basics, communication skills, nursing care, nutrition, positive living, family planning, HIV prevention, antiretroviral therapy, and community mobilization among many others. The companion handbook can be used as a reference during care and as an aid in training clients and primary caregivers.

Pathfinder International is pleased to announce the publication of "Reproductive Health of Young Adults in India: The Road to Public Health." RHEYA’s goal was to promote change in the reproductive behavior of youth, specifically delaying marriage and the first child and spacing subsequent children. The RHEYA project model was groundbreaking in India in recognizing the necessity to develop messages and means of intervention appropriate to the specific needs and interests of young people at different life stages. Over the life of the project RHEYA reached nearly 22,000 adolescents and 3,571 young couples. It has educated and sensitized more than 2,800 parents and other influential adults, and has reached nearly 23,000 other individuals through community activities.
